What a Summer Job Can Teach
Today is the final day of work for our summer employee, Helmi. During her two weeks with us, she helped process customer orders, pack xylitol pastilles, label products for business customers, perform inventory tasks and meet visitors at the Arla Summer Days event in Kitee. A short work experience can teach valuable skills that are difficult to learn in a classroom. Processing orders requires attention to detail, packing products teaches process discipline, and customer interactions build communication skills. Finland is somewhat unique in allowing young people to take on meaningful responsibilities at an early age. For example, food-sector training such as the Hygiene Passport can be completed at a relatively young age, enabling students to gain practical experience in food-related workplaces.
The Hidden Side of E-commerce
Most customers see an online store as a website and a delivery arriving at their door. Behind every order, however, are many essential steps: inventory management, product packing, label verification, stock monitoring and shipping preparation.
These are exactly the activities Helmi experienced during her time with us. They provide valuable insight into how products move from a warehouse shelf to a customer's home.
Helmi told us that her favourite tasks were preparing and packing orders, while inventory work and labelling jars were somewhat less exciting. Discovering these preferences is one of the most important benefits of a summer job.
